In Conversation with Burgin Mathews

Join us at Auburn Oil Company Booksellers on Thursday, February 22nd at 5:30 pm for a conversation with Birmingham author Burgin Mathews. Burgin will be discussing his new book Magic City: How the Birmingham Jazz Tradition Shaped the Sound of America. Magic City is the story of one of American music’s essential unsung places: Birmingham, Alabama, birthplace of a distinctive and influential jazz heritage. The book also celebrates the contributions of local educators, club owners, and civic leaders who nurtured a vital culture of Black expression in one of the country’s most notoriously segregated cities. 

Join us as we adjourn after the store event to Piccolo at the Auburn Hotel and Conference Center for an evening of live jazz hosted by Jose Carr, Ensley native and member of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. It should be a great evening!
